M.M. Carter House

M. M.  (Minetre Mathew) Carter was a native of Arkansas. Carter was known for his business acumen. Carter owned numerous businesses in Randolph County and was well known for his livery stable and horse breeding business.  He also owned more than 1,000 acres of river bottom land. Carter also served as the president of the Pocahontas State Bank. Carter married Mazie Esselman in 1888 and they had three children, Lucile, Fern, and Catherine. The Carters were Catholic.

The Carters build one of Pocahontas’ most remarkable homes and today one of the few surviving examples of the grand homes the towns prosperous merchants build during the New South Era. Below you can watch a tour of the Carter House and see an image of the Carter House as it looked when it was built. In later years much of the ornamentation was removed from the home leaving the house we see today.
