The Randolph County Heritage Museum was founded in 2006 as part of Pocahontas’ Sesquicentennial celebration. Pocahontas is older but the town was not incorporated until 1856. The museum was envisioned as a gift to the people of Pocahontas and Randolph County by the sesquicentennial committee. The museum opened its doors during the celebrations and is still going strong. The museum is housed in a former mercantile building on the court square. Over the years the building has housed numerous stores and more recently a law office.
The building is a contributing structure to the Pocahontas commercial historic district. The building was donated to Five Rivers Historic Preservation by Joe Martin. Martin was a descendant of some of the county’s earliest settlers. The museum is a collaborative effort by many individuals and would not be possible without the many volunteers who have devoted numerous hours to making the museum a success. Furthermore, the museum would not be possible without the generous financial support of donors and the city of Pocahontas. In 2025 the museum expanded into the second floor of the main museum building. This expansion was made possible by the generous support of Don Cox and his family.
